Where’s Dominic?

April 6, 2010

Beaconsfield Labour candidate, Jeremy Miles, is fulfilling his promise to seek out his Conservative opponent, Dominic Grieve, with a new general election campaign cartoon poster : “Where’s Dominic?

Where’s Dominic?

Jeremy Miles said:
“There is a light touch of humour in this poster, but I am also making a very serious point.”

“We have to have a debate about what voters want from their Member of Parliament. The recent Parliamentary scandals have rightly raised the question of what voters, as taxpayers, have the right to expect in return for the salary they pay to their MP. That is as important to voters in Beaconsfield as anywhere else.”

“I’m offering 100% commitment. If elected, I will give up my job, representing Beaconsfield will be my only job and I will devote my time to the constituency. I also undertake to live in the constituency. “

“I know Mr Grieve became a QC recently, 11 years after first being elected for Beaconsfield. Now, that’s a huge achievement and you don’t become a QC without having a demanding legal practice. I don’t know how you could possibly manage that, if you’re giving your constituents 100% commitment.”

“Voters in all parts of the constituency – both Labour and Conservative supporters – have been telling me that they don’t see their MP around here.”

Mr. Miles expanded on his commitment to live in the constituency -

“I see that Mr. Grieve is going to lose his second home under the new MP’s expenses rules, but he’s reported as choosing to give up his Marlow home rather than his home in London. As MP for Beaconsfield, it would never occur to me to live outside the constituency. I would want to live amongst the people I am representing in Parliament.”

“I feel very strongly that being an MP should be a vocation, not a perk. The ‘Where’s Dominic ?’ poster is my invitation to voters in Beaconsfield to let me know what they expect of their MP”.
