About Me

  • I was born and brought up in South Wales, educated at a local comprehensive school and then studied law at New College, Oxford. I was the first in my family to go to university. I saw at first hand in the 80s how a Conservative government abandoned thousands of people to just sink or swim and as a result devastated familes and communites across the UK.
  • I am a lawyer by profession. After graduating and qualifying as a solicitor,  I worked as an adviser to social housing providers and local government on housing regeneration projects. I became a partner at a City law firm and subsequently have worked for an international business  – so I understand the needs of public services as well as the priorities of the private sector.
  • I’m a trustee of an innovative online charity so I also know how vital the voluntary sector is today and how much we all depend on the hard work of volunteers and charity workers to provide much needed support in our communities. I also know how crucial innovation is to helping us deliver responsive, compassionate public services and creating new economic opportunites. This doesn’t just happen – it is the job of government to actively help create the right conditions for our economy to grow in areas like high tech, low carb and advanced manufacturing – the skills and jobs which will support our young people in the future.
  • I joined Labour as a teenager because I believed then – and still believe – that it represents the only means of transforming society in the interests of the many, not the few.  I have seen in my own life the positive effects of progressive government and Labour is the only party truly able to deliver that. I am also a member of the Cooperative Party and I believe that the mutual ethic has a critical role to play in helping us change the way we look at public services,  our communities and the economy.
  • I am a member of Amicus branch of Unite, the Fabian Society and Progress. I am also a member of the Royal Society of the Arts and the Methodist Church at Wesley’s Chapel in London, where I live.
